Nurses working for the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City took these snapshots, which show their lives and the lives of the families they cared for in the 1930s.

“The square in front of our office. Gun Hill subway Station above the Elevated Station.”

Gun Hill subway station opened in 1917 and was the northern terminus of the Third Avenue elevated train line. This view is from near the intersection of East Gun Hill Road and White Plains Road.

The Visiting Nurse Service “office” was located near the intersection at 700 E. 211th Street, Bronx, New York.
