Nurses working for the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City took these snapshots, which show their lives and the lives of the families they cared for in the 1930s.

4 White female nurses around a Ford Model A Coupe at East 200th Street with snow in the Bronx.

“Leaving the office”

The automobile transformed visiting nursing and in the 1910s allowed the Visiting Nurse Service to expand outside of Manhattan to less densely-populated areas of New York City.

The nurses pictured left to right are likely Mrs. Trump, Miss Pearson, Miss Weaver (in the car), Miss Etkin (front driver door), and Helen Buker (far right, with glasses).
