Nurses working for the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City took these snapshots, which show their lives and the lives of the families they cared for in the 1930s.

Two White female nurses in matching winter overcoats and cloche hats standing next to a Ford Victoria.

“Miss Sheehan drives her own car. Miss Weaver and Miss Jeffrey on the way to Mothers’ Club.”

Much of the Bronx in the 1930s was still semi-rural. Nurses required a car to visit many patients in the Gun Hill district.

Miss Weaver and Miss Jeffrey, in matching attire, pose in front of their car on the way to a mothers’ club probably held at Fordham Hospital.
