Nurses working for the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City took these snapshots, which show their lives and the lives of the families they cared for in the 1930s.
“2700 and 2800 Bronx Park East, Jewish Cooperative houses where we have many patients. There are sections for every letter in the alphabet.”
The Allerton Coops were a 700-unit complex built by Jewish immigrant trade unionists in the 1920s. Evictions were forbidden. The Coops were “a little corner of socialism right in New York,” one activist recalled, “it had its own educational events, clubs for men and women, lectures, motion pictures.”
