Nurses working for the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City took these snapshots, which show their lives and the lives of the families they cared for in the 1930s.

A woman holding a baby stands in the doorway of a one-story stucco or cement home.

“De Santis home, mother and children. When we first met the family, the oldest girl was dying of tuberculosis. The mother needed to learn many things about the care of the other children. The nurse with much difficulty persuaded the parents to send them to a clinic for examination and later to a preventorium, which the children liked immensely and where they learned much.”
