Nurses working for the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City took these snapshots, which show their lives and the lives of the families they cared for in the 1930s.

“Evictions. Winter of 1932–1933. Frequent occurrences.”

When landlords evicted families, all their possessions were put out in the street. Although not mentioned in the photo album, residents of the neighborhood surrounding the Visiting Nurse Service office in Gun Hill conducted a major rent strike in the winter of 1932 to protest evictions.
