Nurses working for the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service in New York City took these snapshots, which show their lives and the lives of the families they cared for in the 1930s.

Next to brick steps, a father in hat holds his toddler son, who has a toy in his hands.

“Bronson and his daddy. Now he has a new baby sister. His daddy, too, lost his job in the Depression. Now he is working for one of the social agencies.”

The Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service provided much needed care for families, and referrals to employment agencies, food pantries, and other resources as well.
