Letters from Barbara Parker to Daniel Sheridan, June 10, 1981

Barbara Parker, a registered nurse, assistant professor at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, and volunteer supervisor at a shelter for women, sent this invitation and follow-up letter on the role of nursing in shelters to Daniel Sheridan. Parker described how nursing students undertook a number of tasks at the shelter to gain clinical experience and "apply the nursing process." Given the difficulty and complexity "in working with a family undergoing several simultaneous crises," Parker advised only registered nurses or graduate students for clinical placement in shelters.
