Beginning a Hospital Advocacy Program for Battered Women—One Approach, 1982

Emergency room nurses were instrumental in establishing the Battered Women's Advocacy Program at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, an outreach program of the Harriet Tubman Women's Shelter, in 1977. Identifying hospitals as often the first place women might seek help after being battered, the authors described the role of hospital advocacy and the need for advocate's working relationship with diverse hospital staff—nurses, physicians, social workers, chaplains, and administrators.
