Daniel Sheridan Oral History, 2013

Daniel Sheridan talks about the development of his career in forensic nursing and his role in changing the way nurses, doctors, and other health professionals recognize and treat patients who experience domestic violence. He recalls how he founded the Rush Coalition Against Spouse Abuse in Chicago in the 1980s; wrote the first protocol for his hospital dealing with domestic violence in a hospital emergency room; and pushed back against the medical establishment's prevailing attitude that family domestic violence was primarily a psychiatric issue. Sheridan reflects on what it was like for many years to be the only male nurse on teams working with women who had experienced domestic violence.
