The guide to preferment: or, Powell's complete book of cookery, 1785

Like many other 18th-century cookbooks, Powell's guide explains cooking methods in plain language while including "practical" recipes. What sets this text apart from others, however, are its helpful suggestions on how to judge the quality of groceries, from meats to produce. A chapter on "curious particulars" is also notable, full of tips and recipes for undertaking a wide variety of household tasks, such as polishing arms, curling hair, mending china, and making ink.
