Illinois National Guard, 8th Infantry, regimental medical staff, Camp Grant

Leonidas H. Berry served as an army medical officer in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and also on the Illinois National Guard medical staff. In his autobiographical writings, he expressed disappointment that he was not able to secure a position at Fort Huachuca Hospital in Arizona, the only WWII Army hospital at which black physicians were allowed to practice, due to the political nature of the appointments.
