This book offers instruction on various surgical procedures to address complications in childbirth. Barnes emphasizes choosing techniques and instruments carefully, and places precedence on the mother's life over the fetus'. He explains performing blood transfusions as a way to treat hemorrhage and save the lives of mothers experiencing complications during childbirth. In 1825, several decades before the publication of this book, James Blundell performed the first human-to-human transfusion, saving the life of a patient who was dying of hemorrhage during childbirth.
