Domestic Violence: Wife Abuse in the Medical Setting: An Introduction for Health Personnel, 1981

Evan Stark and Anne Flitcraft were among the first to address how the medical profession could identify and assist women who were battered. They collaborated with other researchers—a plastic surgeon, an internist, a psychologist, a sociologist, and a registered nurse—to explain social attitudes problematic to treatment of abused women. They offered two modes of evaluation, one for high-risk patients and one retrospective. In order to accurately identify, treat, and prevent abuse, they believed health professionals had to be willing to question traditional diagnostic categories and expand their understanding of a medical event to include the perspective of the woman who had been battered.
