Anne Flitcraft Oral History, 2014

Anne Flitcraft pioneered medical reform to improve treatment of survivors of domestic violence. She talks about the arc of her career—from her early research studying women's injuries in emergency rooms and connecting them with domestic violence; to the development of the battered women's movement in the 1970s and 1980s; to her efforts to get domestic violence recognized as a health issue by the medical and public health communities, and placed into professional diagnostic and treatment guidelines. At one point in her career, a colleague told Flitcraft that domestic violence was not an accepted area of expertise, and that, as a professor of internal medicine, she would "have to be the queen bee of something else to get promoted to full professor."
