Simon Paulli, a Danish naturalist and physician, wrote various botanical works throughout the 1600s. In his A treatise on tobacco, tea, coffee, and chocolate, originally published in Latin in 1661 and reprinted in English in 1746, Paulli comments on both the medicinal and harmful qualities of the tobacco and tea plants, and briefly touches upon coffee and chocolate. The book also includes several illustrations of 17th-century tools and utensils related to tea consumption.
