A Curious Herbal, 1737

Elizabeth Blackwell's two-volume herbal contains five hundred hand-colored engravings of medicinal plants, as well as brief written information about each plant's appearance and its uses. Blackwell undertook the herbal to raise money to secure her husband's release from debtor's prison. A skilled artist, Blackwell created the beautiful engravings from observations she made at London's Chelsea Physic Garden between 1737 and 1739.
