The compleat housewife, ... 18th ed., 1773
Eliza Smith's The compleat housewife—first published in 1727—appeared in twenty different editions over the course of fifty years. The first edition contained two hundred family recipes; by the 18th edition the text had seven hundred recipes, as well as instructions for brewing, growing poultry, and administering household medicines. The book was so popular that William Park, a printer in Williamsburg, Virginia, printed an edited American version "suitable for a Virginia kitchen in the 1750s."
