The modern cook: and frugal housewife's compleat guide, …, 1782
E. Spencer advertises him or herself on the frontispiece as the former cook of a "capital" London tavern Spencer's book is replete with basic English recipes for meats, fish, savory puddings, vegetables, and cakes. Less commonly found are recipes for dumplings, "meager" soups and pies for Lent, and a Yorkshire Christmas pie stuffed with five types of fowl and four pounds of butter. Bills of fare and marketing instructions for choosing the freshest meats, fish, and cheese are also included.
