John Ellis, an agent for island of Dominica in the mid-1700s, wrote An historical account of coffeeto promote the island's trade and cultivation of coffee. He discusses coffee's origins in Persia and Arabia, its spread to Europe and the Americas, methods of preparing and drinking it, and its medicinal benefits. Also included are extracts from works about coffee by other authors, and correspondence between the author and notable figures of the time.
