John Chamberlayne's (1666–1723) The natural history of coffee, chocolate, thee, tobacco is a short work that describes the physical properties, methods of preparation, and medicinal qualities of coffee, tea, chocolate, tobacco, juniper, and elder berries. It also includes brief remarks on mum—a "spirituous" liquor which purportedly helped cure scurvy and prevent kidney stones.
