The catechism of health, 1798
In 1794 Bernard Christian Faust (1755–1842), a court physician in the German principality of Schaumberg-Lippe, published a short book designed to teach children the principles of healthy living. This American edition, written in a question and answer format, is full of interesting precautions regarding eating, drinking, sleeping, hygiene, and clothing. Many provide insight into 18th-century beliefs, such as warm rooms make people "weak, simple, stupid, and sick." Signs of diseases such as smallpox, measles, and dysentery are also covered.
