Benjamin Rush, MD, ca. 1840

Benjamin Rush (1746–1813), a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a physician, politician, and well-known professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. As a physician he was an early advocate of preventive medicine, and established the first free pharmacy in the United States. He was also a pioneer in the study and treatment of mental illness.
