William Curtis, 1790
William Curtis (1746–1799), an English botanist and entomologist, began work as an apothecary before turning to botany and natural history. His six-volume Flora Londinensis (1777–1798) describes in English and Latin 73 flora found within a 10-mile radius of London in the mid-18th century, and includes life-size hand-colored copperplate engravings.
